In 1998, while Ian was riding a motorcycle, he was involved in a road traffic accident, where a vehicle lost its trailer which collided with him. As a result of the accident he had his leg amputated in 2007.

He has maintained an active life. Ian enjoys mountaineering indoors and outdoors, instructing a lot of the times. He has participates in fencing. His pursuits also include shooting, rock climbing and dog handling.
