After an industrial accident in 2000, Darren had his left arm amputated above the elbow in 2002 after complications with Compartment Syndrome and subsequent Pyoderma Gangrenosum. This has not deterred Darren from resuming a normal life and in his own words 'has made him stronger'.

Prior to the accident Darren played golf, albeit poorly, but now he maintains losing the arm has improved his game, which he has put down to pure grit and determination. He says, when asked what his handicap is - 'one arm!'. He is a family man at heart.
