In early January of 2000 Gareth was out on a training run for his sport of boxing when he felt dizzy and ill and collapsed while crossing a pedestrian railway crossing. Unfortunately, as he awoke, he found a train bearing down upon him and wasn't able to move out of the way in time to prevent his legs being caught up in the train wheels. As a result of his injuries Gareth had both legs amputated below the knees.

| Gareth is still actively involved in the sport of boxing, where he manages a boxing club and is himself currently in training for the Commonwealth Games. He has also competed in running marathons and has had a go at the Great North Run too. Gareth is also training to become a football referee for the Football Association of Great Britain. |
| Gareth is a qualified pilot and has his own Private Pilots Licence, but not content with that, he's just as happy throwing himself out of an aircraft with a parachute strapped to his back. He's also a dab hand at golf too playing with a "9" handicap. |
| Gareth has appeared at the Jongleurs club doing a stand-up comedy routine, and is therefore clearly not bothered by heckling and ridicule. He's also voice trained in accents, has modelled and has appeared as an extra in Casualty. |
