Alan joined the Army in 1988 at the age of 16 as a Royal Engineer. He later became an Airborne Engineer after completing a parachuting course and went on to serve for a further six years all over the world. It was during a parachuting accident that Alan suffered serious injuries, one of which resulted in the amputation of his left leg below the knee in December 2001. |

| Since leaving the Army in 2002 Alan is now in full time employment driving driving Tanker vehicles in and around London and the South East of England. | ||||||
| Alan has also appeared in a Granada Television documentary called “I Survived” where he was the title subject matter, following how the body reacts to major trauma. |
