When she was 22 Helen Smith contracted the blood poisoning form of meningitis, meningococcal septicaemia. |
Her chance of survival was just 1% but despite the odds she made it. However, it came with a high price, the loss of all four limbs.

After more than 50 operations Helen was discharged from hospital and almost straight away was catapaulted into the media spotlight.

| Helen became known as the worlds first bionic woman and appeared on numerous TV shows all over the world including the Discovery Channel and Korean TV. |
| Helen now works full time as a reporter for Anglia Television News. In her spare time she swims, ski's and wheelchair races. She has also been a statue for Marc Quinn. |
