When she was 22 Helen Smith contracted the blood poisoning form of meningitis, meningococcal septicaemia.

Her chance of survival was just 1% but despite the odds she made it. However, it came with a high price, the loss of all four limbs.

After more than 50 operations Helen was discharged from hospital and almost straight away was catapaulted into the media spotlight.

Helen became known as the worlds first bionic woman and appeared on numerous TV shows all over the world including the Discovery Channel and Korean TV.
Helen now works full time as a reporter for Anglia Television News. In her spare time she swims, ski's and wheelchair races. She has also been a statue for Marc Quinn.
