Clare was only 17 and still at college when she was struck down with Meningococcal Septicaemia in 2001. There then followed a period of 5½ months in a coma during which Clare also suffered a stroke. This left her unable to talk and also as a result of the blood poisoning she had both legs amputated below the knees and the tips of two fingers on her right hand. Clare has now made a full recovery after many years of rehabilitation.
In recognition of her courage, Clare was awarded the West Sussex Argus Achievement Award in 2002.
In June 2004 Clare learned to walk again with suitable prosthetics and completely surprised everyone in her family by announcing that she wanted to compete in the 2005 London Marathon. Her ambition was finally realised by completing this event in a time of 19 hours and 10 minutes.
