At the tender age of two Val contracted TB of the hip joint. This resulted in the left leg being sixteen inches shorter than the right, when she reached adulthood. In 1953, at the age of eighteen, Val chose to have her leg amputated.

Val enjoys swimming, driving and investigating her family history. She used to train and compete in dog obedience competitions.
