In 1981 and six months after joining the Navy, Andrew sustained an injury to his left knee whilst playing rugby. In 2000 and after seven operations Andrew was disabled out of the Navy. He had a knee replacement in 2006 and finally the leg was amputated above the knee in 2007.

Andrew enjoys going to rugby matches and he has taken up golf, taking regular lessons. Although lapsed he is First Aid and Fire Fighting trained.
