In December 2005 Ergi was suffering from a fever with flu like symptoms. Fortunately his wife noticed purple and red blotches on his stomach and raised the alarm. He was rushed to hospital by ambulance and while tests were being made he passed out. Fifteen days later, and in intensive care, Ergi awoke from a coma to find he was hooked to dialysis and (in his words) had more tubes attached to him than he could count, with both legs amputated below the knee. Due to his internal organs failing and his body naturally shutting down his extremities he lost both legs below the knees. He had suffered from Pneumococcol Septicaemia.

Prior to his illness and resulting amputation, Ergi was a drummer for the band called Mika Bomb (which has now disbanded). In 2005, alone, he toured in the UK, Ireland, Europe and United States East Coast, North and South. In total they played between 160 and 170 shows. This on top of a regular job kept him busy.

Ergi is working hard on his physiotherapy and is now able to run. This in turn has led him to a new interest and passion - badminton. Instead of beating the skins of a drum, he can give a shuttlecock a bit of welly. He plays two to three times a week and has started to enter National Disabled Tournaments. He also cycles daily and recently participated in the Hovis London Free Wheel.

And talking about 'welly' he managed to weather Glastonbury in outsized wellies, with prosthetics on and covered in mud. Here he played drums on a Punk Rock Karaoke on the Strummerville Bandstand.

Ergi recently took part and achieved a Bronze in the Men's Doubles at a Badminton Tournament at Ethos Imperial College in South Kensington. He has set his sights on Gold for 2008!
